Do you know the feeling of falling in love after being heartbroken for so long? Do you know that first spark that reignites the forgotten fire in your heart, the one that changes your views on life and challenges you in ways you didn’t think were possible? This is how I felt when I read Before the Coffee Gets Cold. This is the book that made me fall in love with reading all over again.
Now, pour yourself a cup of coffee – or tea, if you prefer – and discover the three different reasons to start reading Before the Coffee Gets Cold.
1- The Moving Plot that Makes You Question Your Life
Written by Toshikazu Kawaguchi, Before the Coffee Gets Cold is the first book of a series of the same name. It is a fiction novel about time travel that makes you question the idea of visiting the past if you had the chance. I am not here to spoil the story but I can give you a sneak peek of what lies ahead when you turn the first page. The book is divided into four chapters and each chapter follows the story of a specific character. What led them here are the rumors they heard of this quiet Tokyo café called Funiculi Funicula. The question now is: Are these characters willing to go through with their plan for time travel after hearing the set of rules and the risks that come with it?
2- The Flawless Translation that Shows You Japan’s Charm
I am most probably biased when I say this but, for me, a good translation is a must. One of the things I really like about this book is that you do not even feel like it is translated because of how well-written it is. Even if I am not fluent in Japanese (yet), I just feel that the translation delivers the book’s essence. Furthermore, as someone who likes the Japanese culture, I know that the English translation of this book perfectly conveys Japan’s charm. It also brings out such raw feelings that show the true message of the author.
3- The Intense Emotions that Drown You in this Realm
Grief, acceptance, closure. The characters go through these three different emotions and your heart breaks for them. You are immersed in their story and you want to mend their broken hearts. Therefore, you keep on reading and you feel their hearts breaking and their souls shattering. But they endure their hardships and, at the end of the chapter, they might even accept their fate. It makes you realize that life doesn’t end here, that there is always a silver lining. Reading this heart-wrenching story was an emotional roller coaster. I was dealing with post-book blues and wanted to reread the book at the same time. Good thing there is a whole series to feed the hungry reader in me!
The stage is all yours now. What story – whether from a book, movie, or series – left a lasting impression on you? And what tale influenced the way you think, feel, or perceive the world around you?
I love how you describe the book as reigniting a forgotten fire, such a powerful metaphor for falling in love with reading again. Your passion for the story and its characters truly shines through <3 Thank you for sharing such an inspiring reflection!

A series that you actually made me look into. It’s definitely a genre that I wouldn’t think of reading. But now you completely changed my mind. I’m getting it as soon as I can and I will read it at the beach with my sunglasses on, under the sun ☀️.

What’s great about books is that we can see the same stories unfold through different eyes. Many books can have the same plot, but each narrator gives us a new point of view along with a moral. You describe this book in a way that piques my curiosity. Reading it could definitely be interesting!
Exactly! I love to see other bookworms getting excited about the books I like. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it!
We’ve had real life conversations about this series and I admit to being vaguely familiar with the plot but I think this article was the final push you needed to get me to read it. Knowing how I usually devour books and need someone to talk to right after finishing them, consider this my warning: get ready for me to talk your ear off soon!
I can’t wait! I’ll be one text away whenever you want to talk my ear off.
There is truly something fascinating about Japanese literature. As someone who has avidly read the entire series, I strongly agree that Kawaguchi’s writing is one of a kind, especially in his delicate depiction of human emotion. Amazing recommendation!
